Writing Advice
Writing Advice by Colleen Houck When I started writing, I created character cards using 3 x 5 cards. I scanned the internet for images of who I thought the character might look like, glued it to one side and wrote the full name of the character underneath. On the back I listed a bio not only the birthday but what kind of traits they had, what were their favorite foods, favorite books, etc. It helped a lot in my early writing. I write using images especially when I hit a block. I look up creepy monsters or graveyards and describe …
The Glamorous Life of an Author

Query Letter
This is my original query letter that I sent out to agents after I wrote Tiger’s Curse. Dear Editor, Kelsey Hayes, an orphan, is a recent high school graduate working for the summer at a small circus. She has no idea that the totally non-glamorous job of sweeping up popcorn and cotton candy sticks would lead her towards her destiny—a perilous new destiny that whisks her away to the far off continent of India where she encounters dangerous mythological creatures, supernatural beings, and booby-trapped caves. However, it will also lead her to magnificent ancient ruins, handsome princes …
Writer’s Workshops
Originally written on August 10, 2010 by Colleen Houck Hi Everyone, This week was crazy and fun. I attended the Willamette Writer’s Conference and met my agent, Alex, for the first time. We visited for just a few minutes then went into a workshop where we presented together along with my movie producer, Raffi. It was a half an hour panel so we only had time for a brief introduction from each of us and then answered a couple of questions. Most of the attendees were unpublished writers who came to the conference seeking representation. Several film producers and agents …
