Word Clouds: How to Turn Your Books Into Art
How to Turn Your Books Into Art I’ve had a lot of fun playing with word clouds on a website called Tagul. It’s pretty easy to turn your book into art for your readers, and it doubles as an editing tool by letting you see how many times you’re using those pesky repetitive words, such as always, like, and very. Here’s How it Works Once you finish your manuscript, open the website and click create. Import your text where it says “words” and scan through the list. The program automatically eliminates apostrophes so you’ll have to manually delete all the …

Charon the grumpy Ferryman
Charon or Kharon is the ferryman of Hades who ferries the newly deceased souls across the rivers Styx and Acheron which divide the world of the living from the world of the dead. To pay for the passage you need a coin to pay Charon. Normally an obolus or danake was placed in or on the mouth of the dead person to pay for this passage. If the dead could not pay the fee, or if the body is left unburied those souls were left to wonder the shores for hundred of years. Watch how Perseus gains passage from …
Minotaurs: Punishment from Poseidon
The origin story of the Minotaur is one of punishment given by the god Poseidon to the disobedient King Minos of Crete. King Minos sacrificed his most prized bull each year to Poseidon, but one year a calf was born that was so exquisite he chose to sacrifice a lesser bull in order to save the prized one for himself. Poseidon was not fooled by the immolated calf, and punished King Minos by his wife, the queen gave birth to a half human half bull child. Since King Minos we have seen Minotaur in movies and books. In …
The Crocodile Temple of Kom Ombo
-before reconstruction The temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple in Kom Ombo in Upper Egypt. It was constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty by Ptolemy VI Philometor (180-145BC) and it was added to by each new Ptolmy. During the Roman period even more additions. The building is special because it built for two triads of deities. There were two halls, courts, even sanctuaries and rooms for each god. The southern part was for Sobek, the god of fertility and the creator of the world with his wife Hathor and Khonsu their son. The northern part was for the …

Sphinxes Throughout History
Sphinxes Sphinxes are mythological creatures that have the head or top of a person and the body of a lioness or lion. They have been found throughout all of history starting with Egypt. The Egyptians would place them around temples and important structures like pyramids to protect the buildings from unwanted guests. They became a symbol of protection and knowledge. The biggest example and the most well known is the Great Sphinx in Giza. It was build form the bedrock of the desert to protect the pyramids. A story that is written on the monument tells of a …

Recreated Teaser Tuesday- Sneak Peek #2
Recreated Sneak Peek #2 As she sipped her tea and rocked, her twinkling eyes studied me in the dim room. “What’s bothering you, Lilypad?” she asked. A stream of words crossed my tongue but melted away like chocolate over a flame. “I…it’s hard to talk about,” I said finally. “Is it your parents? College?” “No.” “Ah…it’s a young man then.” I grimaced and then nodded once. “Tell me about him,” she encouraged. Could I? If anyone would understand or believe me, it would be her. Anubis hadn’t said I couldn’t tell anyone. He probably just assumed that no one …
